Connection Between Text & Class

The following documents correlate to our technical writing course as described below.

In the Participatory Institutional Design document, the author shows the relevance and importance of participatory design (such as human computer interaction and city planning committees) with the construction of community literacy programs. I think this documentation is relevant to our course. It shows the importance of community participation and the value of community ideas. I think it is beneficial to obtain community involvement when a new plan/idea will affect several members of the community. This article shows the importance of gathering ideas from the community by gaining expertise in the community from its members, making the community pleased with the new suggested changes, and planning an implementation of the changes in the community. As we are discussing in class, the charette has been designed to provide community involvement in creating a new organization that may be needed in northwest Ohio. With community involvement and ideas, area experts can take ownership of this idea and show the importance of this new organization to other community members.

Also in the Rearticulating Civic Engagement Through Cultural Studies & Service-Learning document, the author shows the importance of service-learning projects in real world writing assignments. I think it is important for students to interact with the community while learning the role of being a technical writer. Students can gain worldly experience interacting with the community that is not available at the “school workplace.” By completing internships or experience off-campus, students will gain a new perspective. This corresponds with our technical writing course, as we are gaining knowledge from the community. We would not be able to gather this information on our own.
